Biography
Dr. Mgaza Somo Muya received BSc in Geology from University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) in 1998, MSc in Geotechincal Engineering in 2003 and Doctor of Phillosophy in Geotechnical Engineering in 2006 both from Huazhong of Science and Technology (HUST), P.R. China.
He was a Service Delivery Manager at Huawei Telecommunication Co. (T) Ltd., based in Dar es salaam Tanzania from June, 2006 to June 2009 and from July 2009 to December 2009 as Geotechnical Engineer at China Railway Jiachang Engineering (CRJE) Co .(T) Ltd., from July 2009 to December 2009, before joining Mbeya University of Science and Technology in December 2009 as Lecturer in the Department of Built Environment Engineering (BEE), College of Engineering and Technology (CET).
At Mbeya University of Science and Technology Dr. Muya is responsible for Lecturing Soil Mechanics, Soil Mechanics and Foundation, Engineering Geology, Introduction to Physical Geology, Basic Mineralogy, Petrology and Ore Geology and Research Methodology. Deputy Head of Research and Publications Department from July 2012 to May 19th 2013, Supervising students in the projects and Departmental Coordinator for NTL-8 Projects, Research and Publications Department Coordinator, Departmental Representative in Mining Engineering Curriculum Development (CDTT member), Member in Transformation of the Memorandum of Understanding between Lilongwe and Mbeya Institute of Science and Technology, Team member in the Implementation of Transformation Process of MIST to MUST, Teaches up to undergraduate (NTA level 8), Prepares learning resources and design training exercises for students, Conducts consultancy and community services, Develops and reviews existing curriculum of Mbeya University of Science and Technology. Undertakes individual research and participates in scientific/academic congregations, Coaches junior teaching staff, Member in Quality Assessment Team and a Departmental Trainer, Head in the Department of Admission Office from May 20th 2013 to Date, Assist the Director of Undergraduates (DUS) in planning, coordinating, directing and controlling Admissions matters of the University, Advise DUS on all matters pertaining to Admission of student, Responsible for the implantation of the University’s admission policies, rules and procedures, Responsible for keeping proper records of all student’s Admission matter, Propose admission development policies, Coordinates Undergraduate programs, Advises Senate on academic matters, Review and approves curricular and do any other activities as may be directed from time to time by the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic, Research and Consultancy (DVC ARC)
Consultancy Services
Develops curriculum for Technical Training Program (TTP) of Mbeya Cement Company(MMC) - Lafarge group of Industries 2012, Construction of Irrigation Scheme at Mshewe Village in Mbeya Region 500m Long 2012, Ipelele Mini Hydropower Plant Makete 2013, Mpando Njombe Mini Hydropower Plant 2013, Jangwani Mini Hydropower Plant 2013, Mfwizimo Dam Imbeya Irrigation 2014, Expansion of New Cement MILL and SILO at Mbeya Cement Company 2014, Rehabilitation and Remodeling of Folk Development College (FDCs) Infrastructures at Kibondo, Kihinga, Msaginya, Urambo, Kasulu and Mwanva 2018.
Research Interest
His research interest includes Simulation Modeling, Stress Distribution around Tunnels, Underground Mining and Rock Bolting on Tunnels. He has published five (5) journal papers.

He is a registered member of Engineers Registration Board (ERB), Registered National Council for Technical Education (NACTE), Institution of Engineers Tanzania (IET) and Geological Society of Tanzania, (GST).
